National Guidebook Praises Quality of University's Majors

Jan 29, 2008

A national college guidebook puts Harrisburg University of Science and Technology on students’ and counselors’ watch lists as a keeper.

The 2008 Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges questioned a number of guidance counselors about quality majors at selective colleges. The counselors’ responses put many of Harrisburg University’s majors into the 25th edition of the book.

University majors appearing in the national guidebook book are Biotechnology and Biosciences, Environmental Chemistry, Computer and Information Science, Forensics, and Geography and Geospatial Imaging.

“The book lists quality departments at quality colleges,” according to Frederick E. Rugg, who authors the book. He is a former secondary school college counselor and started this book to help guidance counselors as well as high school students and their parents with college selection.

The 2008 edition recommends fields of study at over 1,100 quality four-year colleges to study.  The book represents the top 12 percent of college departments for each field of study.  The recommendations are based on interviews with students, monthly evaluations from secondary school counselors, and responses to questions sent to more than 1,000 counselors each fall.

“Our inclusion in this book is another indicator of our growing reputation for offering an applied science and technology education,” says Dr. Mel Schiavelli, president of Harrisburg University.

Rugg’s Recommendations is in over 80% of America’s high schools and libraries. The guidebook has been designated nationally as a “revered staple, the book parents and students must start with” in the search for a college to attend. The 25th edition is the accumulation of over 35 years of work in the undergraduate admissions process.
