Camp Director

Harrisburg University of Science and Technology seeks a full-time camp director to organizing, implement and manage engaging camp programs for middle school, high school and community college students across disciplines at Harrisburg University.  The director will develop and expand local and global partnerships to increase camp enrollment, enabling students to gain early awareness and readiness for programs at HU. This is a hands-on role that requires active engagement with internal and external partners and leaders to design comprehensive and effective short-term (two-day to four-week) programs, at HU campuses and off-site locations, throughout the year.  The role combines administrative functions, budget management, marketing, student supervision and program staffing and management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with faculty, university leaders and external educators to develop competitive and successful programming and camp schedules; assist with course descriptions and curriculum development; establish long and short-range plans to ensure the ongoing development of comprehensive camps
  • Work with on-campus partners to provide support for camps; manage the camp faculty and student worker employment process; solicit and assign lead instructors and student assistants; work with human resources and payroll to confirm work eligibility, process onboarding and ensure compensation accuracy
  • Coordinate with appropriate internal and external partners regarding classrooms, labs, housing needs, meals, supplies, etc. needed for the camp programs; coordinate scheduling for classrooms, field trips, social and cultural activities
  • Arrange housing, transportation, visas and other administrative elements for global partner programs
  • Develop and implement camp policies, rules and guidelines to ensure a positive and safe environment
  • Handle all questions, inquiries, problems and concerns of students and guardians before and during camp; establish a procedure for handling difficulties related to health, behavior, and/or other related issues
  • Establish and manage an operating budget for camp programs and control expenditures within in a fiscally responsible manner to ensure that programs are developed and delivered on time and within budget
  • Identify and communicate with international partners to continue existing short-term programming and potential for new international programs
  • Work with the communications team to develop a camp program marketing strategy; communicate camp opportunities to students, parents and advisors through the most effective means including relationship-based networking, social media, list serves, marketing materials and other means of communication; increase established and perspective awareness of HU’s camp programs through relationship outreach and development, high school visits, presentations and meet-and-greets for local and global secondary school leaders


  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a STEM related field and experience in event planning
  • Experience managing summer camps or immersion programs that meet the needs of a diverse community preferred
  • Experience in a college or university setting addressing the needs of international, nontraditional and underrepresented groups preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, target and partner with secondary-school teachers, counselors and principals
  • Financial acuity, including budget management and revenue generation
  • Experience training and supervising staff preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal direction and demonstrated experience providing direction or leadership in a team setting
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, especially during summer camp programs
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation; high level of energy, flexibility, initiative and creativity
  • Organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with frequent interruptions
  • Excellent writing, presentation and intercultural communication skills and demonstrated ability to develop strong, collaborative relationships with a variety of audiences, including local and international STEM faculty, university colleagues, secondary-school leaders, parents and children
  • Must have reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a vehicle
