Harrisburg Location to Close Early
Due to the inclement weather and anticipated road conditions, Harrisburg University’s location will close at 3:45 p.m. on January 7th. There will be no evening classes at the Harrisburg location on January 7th.
Students, faculty, and staff should dial 717.901.5199 to access the University’s operating schedule. Should Harrisburg University open late, close early, or cancel classes for the day due to inclement weather or other emergencies, a message will be left on the University’s voicemail at that number. Additionally, the University will post any changes to its operating schedule on the main page of the website.
The University does not follow the lead of any other organization with regard to weather cancellations and/or delays, and it will make every effort to remain open and available to students. If, the University remains open during or following a weather-related event or other emergencies, it is up to each student and employee to make a reasonable decision about whether to travel. Safety and common sense should guide decisions. Students are expected to notify their faculty, and employees are expected to report to their supervisors. HU will not make personal calls to students or employees. The University will follow City of Harrisburg and/or Commonwealth mandated emergency procedures in the event of a weather-related emergency, too.
Emergency Notification System
Students, faculty, and staff are strongly encouraged to sign up for emergency campus alerts via email or text message by logging into MyHU and accessing the Omnilert (formerly e2Campus) signup form. Students will find the form under the Student Services tab. Staff and faculty will find it under the Intranet tab. Harrisburg University’s Emergency Notification Service (ENS) is used to communicate with subscribers through voice, text, and email messages, as deemed appropriate in the event of an emergency. Each subscriber can designate up to three contact numbers and specify text, email and/or voice messages. The Emergency Notification Service is designed for use with portable devices and is only one aspect of a layered approach to notifying the University community of emergencies.
Course Work During Inclement Weather and Unscheduled Closings
When faced with the unplanned physical closure of Harrisburg University (326 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101 and other physical locations) due to inclement weather or other reasons, it is understood that course work will continue. Faculty will decide whether coursework will be conducted in asynchronous or synchronous (or combined) format. Asynchronous format refers to course work that can be done by students independent of the instructor or other students. Synchronous format refers to sessions that will be held in real time involving both the students and instructor.
Asynchronous or Synchronous Virtual Format:
Asynchronous: Faculty will provide course content, activities, or assessments in the session(s). Students will complete these activities during the day, independent from one another. Examples may include:

A ‘QA’ forum (meaning one must post before reading the posts of others) featuring scenario-based activities requiring learners to think through ill-structured problems while documenting their thought processes and potential solutions
Assignments or readings from course textbook and online submission of a post and/or discussion
Revisit previous lab work and identify extensions of the activity or additional real-world applications for the completed lab
Identification of examples (and non-examples) of a course tenet (e.g. identifying examples and non-examples of quality user interface design)
Student development of discussion questions based on the course content taught to date
Synchronous: Faculty will provide a class session, during the scheduled or adjusted time, using Adobe Connect in a synchronous, virtual format. Faculty that intend to use the synchronous option for the Fall, Late Fall, Spring, or Late Spring semesters should contact https://ithelp.harrisburgu.edu/support/home to communicate their desire for Adobe Connect resources. Please include in your message the Course Number, Section, and Semester for all courses that you would like to have a synchronous option for. Subsequent orientation and training on the system will be provided.
