News magazine showcases HU research, concert series economic impact
There’s always newsworthy research, events, and developments underway at Harrisburg University.
And in two recent articles, The Burg news showcased a significant research project at the university and the boost our concert series is having on the local economy.
In the article, Research on a Roll: HU, Bodhana Group team up to explore tabletop games as therapy, The Burg details the university’s partnership with a York-based nonprofit that uses tabletop role-playing games as a mental health therapy tool.
HU’s research team is working alongside key therapy specialists at the Bodhana Group, exploring how existing RPG therapies are applied to different populations of at-risk individuals.
The investigators plan to measure the effectiveness of such intervention for each group, as well as how the use of the game-based therapies could be improved for their target youth population.
The group is particularly interested in whether there are specific groups who might benefit more from these interventions, and why.

In the article Bands and Bucks: When HU Presents Plays, the Local Economy Hums along, The Burg details the university’s concert series that is estimated to have pumped at least $1.5 million into the greater Harrisburg economy during its first year.
In addition to bringing people downtown while raising brand awareness in an interactive, cost-effective way, HU President Dr. Eric Darr told the magazine:
“Whatever we can do to improve the city of Harrisburg, improve the life here, that’s what we should do,” said Darr, who admits to being “a little crazy” about annual family excursions to concerts and music festivals. “The music represents one of the ways for improving life and economics in the city of Harrisburg for everybody.”
